
As one of the four subjects of the quadrivum, the others being; Arithmetic, Geometry & Astronomy, music does have its importance. With the quadrivium considered to be the study of number and its' relationship to physical space or time, the study of music is the study of number in time, or as an applied number. Therefore the study of music has always been regarded highly. This article from Science Daily argues that the study of music has an extra beneficiary, in that it may have a beneficial biological impact on the aging process.
